What Affects the MOQ of Custom Merchandise?
Why minimum order quantities vary so much between products - and the practical levers that can bring an MOQ closer to what your project actually needs.

One of the first questions in any custom merchandise project is also the most frustrating one: what is the minimum order quantity? The honest answer is that MOQ is not a single number - it is the result of several decisions, some of which you can influence.
What drives the minimum
Customization depth is the biggest factor. A stock product with a printed logo has a low minimum because the factory takes on little risk. A fully custom shape needs new tooling or molds, and those costs are spread across the order - which raises the practical minimum. Material also matters: custom-colored fabrics or ceramics often require minimum production runs at the material factory itself.
The levers you actually have
First, adjust the customization, not the idea. Keeping the product body standard and customizing the logo, packaging or colorway keeps tooling simple. Second, consolidate designs: ordering two colorways of one product usually costs less than two separate products at half quantity. Third, be flexible on schedule - joining an existing production run can reduce a minimum significantly.
MOQ and total project cost
A low MOQ with a high unit price is not always the bargain it looks like. For corporate gifts and brand merchandise, the real question is total project cost against the value the items deliver. Sometimes a slightly higher quantity unlocks a unit price that makes the whole program work better.
Every product has a different structure behind its minimum, so the fastest way to a real number is a short conversation.
