How to Make Event Merchandise Useful Beyond the Event

Event merchandise usually has a lifespan of one day. How to choose and design pieces that attendees keep using - so the event keeps working too.

Most event merchandise is designed for a single day: the conference, the launch, the festival. By the next morning it is already in a bag heading for a drawer. It does not have to be that way - the difference is designing for the month after, not just the day of.

Choose items with a life of their own

Drinkware, tote bags, apparel and desk items all have jobs that outlast the event. Lanyards and paper materials do not. If an item would not be picked up by someone who missed the event, it is decoration, not merchandise.

Design the event out of the logo

A item printed with the event name and date has an expiry date. The same item branded with the organizing brand's identity - colors, mark, one line of character - stays useful for years. Put the specific event details on the insert card instead; people can keep the card or not.

One good item beats five filler items

Budget spread across five cheap pieces produces five things people leave behind. The same budget on one genuinely good piece - a well-made bottle, a heavyweight tote - produces something attendees carry into their daily life, with your brand on it.

Think about the second audience

Merchandise that gets used in public - a cap, a bottle on a desk - works for people who never attended. That second audience is free reach, and it only exists if the item is worth carrying.
